National Best Friend Day

This past Tuesday (8.26) was NATIONAL DOG DAY and I MISSED IT!

DAMMIT!

I can’t believe I was oblivious to the greatest day on the planet, while owning the greatest dog on the planet. The only thing that makes me feel just a wee bit better is the fact that we still have leftover tri-tip in the house, and Sammypants has been getting top-notch meat nuggets all week under the table (a REALLY special treat).

But he deserves so much more, for being the best pup we could have ever asked for. Bravely rushing into the yard ahead of us every morning to protect us from bloodthirsty squirrels! Warning us of every old lady who strolls by the house at sunset! Fearlessly disemboweling every fluffy, fuzzy, stuffed invader on the premises!

Smoking all the dogs at the dog park. Schmoozing all the lady pooches… Faithfully by our side even when we’re on the toilet and snuggling us every night on the couch, he never says “I HATE YOU GUYS!” and he never demands we buy him an iPhone. And we never have to worry about him getting a girl pregnant.

Sammy, this weekend you’re going to chase SO many squirrels at Lake Almanor. But before that, I’m gonna sneak you as many meat nuggets as I can get past your dad. Here’s to you, my best little buddy…

What an entertaining chronicle of this lucky dog’s happy life! There are humans that don’t enjoy this level of love and respect in a relationship. What is wrong with us? Never could understand dogs until Sammy came along. Now I don’t only understand them, I love them! Kind of like having a kid changes the way you look at the world. All God’s creatures deserve to love and be loved. Especially Sammy!
