Setting Things Straight

Downstairs renovations are in full swing yet again here, and as often happens when the house is under construction, I’ve become an emotional, moody, unpredictable, insane bitch (which is apparently not that different from my day-to-day vibe lately!).

There’s something about tearing the walls of my house open that both causes my soul to spill over with joy at the promise of ACTUALLY living in my dream home some day, and simultaneously consumes it with hatred when I discover 100 years of sub-par f#@%ups hidden between sheetrock and joists and subfloors, all demanding a fix. Meet the Veggies

Grow your own food!

Grow your own food!

It’s planting season at 3675!

With two brand-spanking-new 6′ x 3′ beds and a WHOLE lotta big empty pots as our canvases, Team Temple went a little vegetable crazy this past weekend.

After putzing around the house all day Saturday and getting the yard into tip-top shape, we made an early morning dog park run on Sunday, then hit up our neighborhood seed bank/urban farming storehouse.

Wait – did I mention we stopped for vegan brunch in between? Good God – we’re Portlandia personified.  Continue reading

New Door Ajar

At long last (or at least what FELT long), actual progress has been made on our downstairs renovation project!

i.e., we hustled back to Ashby Lumber this week and picked out doors. Here’s what we got:

Our winning door! Only difference is our hardware, though also black oiled copper, will have a cool square plate behind the knob to emphasize the panel forms.

Our winning door! Only difference is our hardware, though also black oiled copper, will have a cool square plate behind the knob to emphasize the panel forms.

We’re absolutely in love with our choice. We resisted the urge to stick with a boring, safe, old school single-panel door (like what we have now) and boldly went with a classic Craftsman three-panel, WITH shaker paneling.

That’s right – no scallop at all! THIS IS IMPORTANT!

It’s an authentic look we think is true to the modest, early Craftsman style of our house – a clutch choice for bringing back 3675’s original flavor, and now we’ll be forced (in a good way!) to see it through in trim and when we eventually continue the renovations on the main level.

And you thought these were JUST DOORS. Sheesh.

Anyway, now we just need them to GET HERE and some hammers to start swingin’…

Easter Funday

Trent_MtTam

Easter meditations, California-style.

It seems sacrilegious to even type it, but these past ten years Easter has become an EPICALLY fun holiday.

It’s true – Easter was not an epically fun holiday as a kid. Namely because I grew up in a Catholic family (sorry, Munga, but now that I’m almost 40 I have the courage to say it!). Continue reading
