Friday Flashback, Vol. V

It’s time to flash back again, this time to that most bountiful era of embarrassing photos…

College.

Tonight, my college roommate, bridesmaid, and all-around partner in crime, Anna, arrives for her first-ever visit to the Bay Area. Trent will be out of town for the weekend, helping out my other best girlfriend, Kim, at her nonprofit in Michigan. Anna and I will be on our own, on a girls-only cocktails-aplenty adventure.

Because, you know – who needs to do good things like present to high schoolers at an educational nonprofit when you could, um, be drinking cocktails aplenty with your girlfriends?

Anna’s super-sweet hubby and doting father of her children, Vince, bought her this plane ticket for her birthday. He used his hard-earned frequent flier miles. And this ain’t no 30,000-mile ticket, peeps – this is a 50,000-MILE ticket. So we’re gonna make the most of it – starting now, as I warm up by reliving all our ridiculous adventures over the years, and all the reasons why I looove Anna. I gotta make the next eight hours go by quickly!

So, here comes something ridiculous in saturated 90s Kodak color – with date stamp! Continue reading

Friday Flashback: Vol. III

So I think after this I’ll probably only flash back on the occasional Friday; maybe one Friday a month or so. I mean, I can’t have every other post on this blog be a flashback, because that’s just gonna end up being waaayyy too embarrassing for this moi.

But, last week I said I’d be back this week, and I‘m nothing if not predictable dependable, so here it is…

FLASHBACK:

Lisa_14thBday.jpg

My 14th birthday party, 1992. There are a lot of braces in this photo. And I’m still in touch, sans Facebook, with several of these girls, and their teeth all look great now.

Gaaahhh… Ha ha. Man, I REALLY loved Express French Country Style back then. I don’t know what I was thinking. I had at least four of those “ribbed tunics,” in slightly different luminescent jewel tones. AND I LOVED THEM ALL EQUALLY.

But really, I picked this photo because Cindy Phillips Weflen – the babe with the black bouffant in front – was really on my mind this week. She’s getting pretty prego by now over in Boston, and I’m on my way to visit her and her super groovy Harvard PhD hubby next month. When I heard about the bombings at the Boston Marathon and the subsequent cinematic firefight in the streets of Cambridge, I immediately wondered if…

  1. The Weflen family was all safely out of the danger zone (along with my myriad other friends in Boston/Cambridge, like MC Eddo and Downtown Julie Brown)
  2. Baby Weflen had tried to bust outta her mama early, apprehend the bomber, and whoop some terrorist ass…

…because that’s just what a mini-Cindy would do. Probably dressed like a ninja.

Turns out, all are safe (yay!), and Baby W is still incubating according to plan. And I’m crazy excited to see the whole fam – Mom, Dad, and Unborn – in one month.

I may even pick up some sweet “vintage” 90s wear for the occasion.

I’ll return with more braces-and-bad-fashion-nostalgia in two to three Fridays.

Kickstart My Friendship

In two days we leave for a week of vacation in Costa Rica’s Manuel Antonio National Park. We’re desperately in need of a vacation, after the month we’ve had.

But actually, getting through escrow was probably the easiest accomplishment of the past month. Our escrow process wasn’t that bad at all. Inspections yielded better news on the house than expected, our loan was approved instantly, underwriter didn’t ask us one single question.

But it was still all happening, and on TOP of it, I had probably the most stressful month I’ve had yet at my job. I was also feeling a little under the weather (MS-style), and had a bunch of doctor’s appointments. Annoy-o. And of course Trent had to send the magazine out last week.

AND, there were a few things that came up which we shan’t put out in a public forum just yet… But they’re good. Just time consuming.

So, the house is now pretty much done, the loan docs signed. The work projects are over, the magazine is out. The bill of health is clean, the dog-sitter is lined up (thank you, Katy!). We’re doing the laundry, packing, and getting excited. For many reasons.

But the main reason is that this isn’t just a vacation. We’re going to Costa Rica for a wedding: the wedding of my friend, John, and his fiance, Ashley. I’ve known John for over 20 years, and this is going to be a week-long tropical party with people I’ve known since–as I like to put it–they all had mullets and I had a mushroom cut.

Let’s take a look back at the past 20+ years, then, shall we? Continue reading
