Relief

2381 did not burn down.

Actually, the Butte Fire is STILL burning, but it’s now 74% contained and all evacuation orders have been lifted. The danger has passed.

Trent and I had to see for ourselves though, so after talking to our neighbor, Nick, we drove up this past Friday night after work. Skies were blue, there was nary a plume of smoke on the horizon, and the only evidence of a 70,000+ acre wildfire still smoldering a dozen miles away over the mountains were the hordes of fire trucks jammed into every lodge parking lot along Highway 4. Baptism by Fire

If Labor Day was 2381’s house “warming,” this past week has been its baptism by fire.

The Butte Fire is currently raging too close to our beloved Ebbetts Pass corridor and, though the heroes of Cal Fire have done an amazing job holding it at bay, we’re having a hard time unplugging from the devastating coverage:

Please don't come any closer, mkay?

Please don’t come any closer, mkay?

The weather has turned damp, though, making the outlook sunny, and we’re hopeful our home and our new community (including the majestic giant sequoias of Calaveras Big Trees State Park just down the road from us) are going to make it.

Still can’t help but sweat when you look at a photo like that though, huh?

Warm + Toasty

2381 is officially christened.

Cheers to our new special place.

Cheers to our new special place.

Broken-in as our most special of all special places.

Warmed-up as a hideaway for the people (and animals) we love, to laugh, overeat, drink too much, sleep in, be loud or be quiet, and enjoy some of our beautiful, dwindling, pristine places in this country.  Continue reading

Cabin Blues

We never thought our new cabin would give us the blues, but it has.

So many of them.

This many, to be exact:

Jellyfish Blue? (didn't know they were blue)

Artistic Blue? (aren't they all?) Marina City? (sounds so very, very blue)

GOD I HATE PAINTING. Even just a tiny little bit of brand new trim. Especially when you don’t know what color you’re dealing with. And don’t want to cut out a piece of your old trim to get a sample (although, in hindsight, we could have, and should have, just done that).

But, now we have a new friend in the Arnold ACE Home Center. His name is Matt, and he works the paint counter. And he is happy to help you one, two, five times in the same weekend.

STEELE BLUE.

TA DA.

No more painting. Seriously.

Time to get to the “vacation” part of the “vacation home.”

Expansion

We’ve officially moved into 2381!

Sam waking up to the chirp of squirrels in the pines on his first morning at 2381.

We just spent our first weekend there. It was a little more work than we expected, and yet there was still something so blissful about it… Even when we’re doing work in our vacation home, it’s still our vacation home. Continue reading
