Doors = Done

OPERATION: NEW DOWNSTAIRS is complete. And with a F#@%ING EXCLAMATION POINT!

I finally succeeded in hiring the perfect contractor. Best Value Home Improvements did a FLAWLESS job replacing all but one of the interior doors in my house (they all happen to be on the lower, non-entry level; we live on a hill, remember), removing one closet, building another, putting a pocket door in my master walk-in even though the ceiling slopes four inches, and replacing all the downstairs trim. Setting Things Straight

Downstairs renovations are in full swing yet again here, and as often happens when the house is under construction, I’ve become an emotional, moody, unpredictable, insane bitch (which is apparently not that different from my day-to-day vibe lately!).

There’s something about tearing the walls of my house open that both causes my soul to spill over with joy at the promise of ACTUALLY living in my dream home some day, and simultaneously consumes it with hatred when I discover 100 years of sub-par f#@%ups hidden between sheetrock and joists and subfloors, all demanding a fix. New Door Ajar

At long last (or at least what FELT long), actual progress has been made on our downstairs renovation project!

i.e., we hustled back to Ashby Lumber this week and picked out doors. Here’s what we got:

Our winning door! Only difference is our hardware, though also black oiled copper, will have a cool square plate behind the knob to emphasize the panel forms.

Our winning door! Only difference is our hardware, though also black oiled copper, will have a cool square plate behind the knob to emphasize the panel forms.

We’re absolutely in love with our choice. We resisted the urge to stick with a boring, safe, old school single-panel door (like what we have now) and boldly went with a classic Craftsman three-panel, WITH shaker paneling.

That’s right – no scallop at all! THIS IS IMPORTANT!

It’s an authentic look we think is true to the modest, early Craftsman style of our house – a clutch choice for bringing back 3675’s original flavor, and now we’ll be forced (in a good way!) to see it through in trim and when we eventually continue the renovations on the main level.

And you thought these were JUST DOORS. Sheesh.

Anyway, now we just need them to GET HERE and some hammers to start swingin’…

New Door Opening

ALMOST.

I’m so annoyed with myself, because we’re supposed to be well on our way to the amazing new downstairs of our dreams, but our project hasn’t kicked off yet because we’re big fat gross smelly failures.

That’s right – Team Temple actually failed to complete our ONE assignment this past weekend. Just ONE, in between playing with our dog and drinking Arnold Palmers in the backyard. Continue reading
