Covering Ground

We’ve given up on grass.

California is on the brink of what could be a century of drought. We’ve had just 9 inches of rain in the past year here in Oakland. That’s an apocalypse stat, people.

It’s officially too dry for grass to grow any more.

At first, that made us a little sad, since we have a really pretty raised grass lawn in our yard. It’s kind of the yard’s centerpiece, really. I’m not gonna lie – I shed a few tears as I gazed out at our rapidly-yellowing centerpiece every evening.

We even tried a methodical reduced watering schedule that juuust miiight have gotten us through, but who were we kidding. ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF DROUGHT, PEOPLE. Continue reading

Unwelcome Interruption

I was doing really well on my break from house worries…

My friend Jason has been visiting from Ohio; we’ve been bumming around, hiking, eating, drinking, looking at art and talking about sports, and generally doing nothing productive.

No house chores, no research, no planning.

Until…

Sammy spoiled it.

Spoiled it by digging up the precious grass we managed to grow from seed in the bald spot in our lawn. The grass meant to be a test environment for the groundcover strategy we’re going to formulate (god, I sound like my father).

Operation: Kickass

We have implemented “Operation: Kick the Yard’s Ass.”

A couple weeks ago, we interviewed some landscapers, one of which we’re planning to hire in October to helps us rebuild all the extensive stonework in our yard and tackle some other taxing manual labor that we just really don’t want to do. Maybe re-sod all of our raised lawn, yada yada…

But in order to justify spending money on that, we’ve decided that we need to suck it up and clean up ALL the rest of the crap the previous ASSHOLE owners of the house left us. And believe us, though we’ve been out there working pretty much every weekend since we moved in, there’s still a lot of crap. Continue reading
