New year rising...

New year rising…

We started 2017 in Joshua Tree National Park. I, personally, started it – for the most part – sick in Joshua Tree National Park.

I’ve been sicker than a dog for two weeks now. I spent my long-anticipated 2.5-week winter shutdown SICK. Sick sick sick (for the second year in a row, actually – sure hope this isn’t some kind of omen about 2017!). I worked my ass off all fall, right up until the last minute, setting a new record for submissions to the Adobe Design Achievement Awards, running the student experience at Adobe MAX, holding the first-ever Adobe Career Bootcamp, and then I finally got my break – only to be SICK.  Continue reading

Find Your Art

Today is my last day as head of the Brand team at Art.com.

Wow, what a job this has been.

Fabulous, exciting, rewarding, difficult, disappointing, demanding, groundbreaking, frustrating, emotional… In my now 16 years in the workforce I’ve had more than a few jobs, and this is one I know I’ll still be thinking about on the day I retire.

Regardless of where I am, how far I’ve risen or how low I’ve sunk, how much money I’ve made or lost, how many lives I’ve changed or how many lives I’ve ruined (but let’s hope for the former), wherever I am I’ll still remember this place. I’ll remember the things I learned, the people I met, the people I worked for and the people who worked for me, the decisions I made or didn’t make.

Art.com changed me. For better, for worse, and everything in between. Continue reading

The New Skin

It’s now clear that one of my toughest life chapters has been unfolding over the course of the past six months. The cumulative effect of this now half year of horrible job stress, family illness, worry too big for my own good, and general life uncertainty as I near middle age has been, well…

Cumulative. Crap. Cumulative crap.

I’m certainly aware that things could get worse – they have been worse, which is why I’m not willing to deem this the worst chapter. I learned way too early in life not to tempt the universe like that.

But it’s definitely been rough; rough in a way I haven’t experienced in a while. Continue reading

Parking Encounters

Sometimes, when you’re having a tough time, you just need to go to Safeway.

You just need to go to Safeway, so that on your way in, you can bump into the woman parked next to you, who is on her way out.

She looks (and sounds) like “Yoga Jones“, the hippie sage from Orange is the New Black. She’s carrying way too much crap, and smoking a cigarette at the same time. In her armloads of crap is a full vase of roses.

Which she drops. Right behind the wheel of her car (luckily, not yours).

And she just laughs, and smiles through her cigarette, and says “Ah well, f#@% it!” She sets all her crap down, bends over, picks up the best rose from the bunch, and gives it to you.

To me.

“You look like you could use it.”

Indeed I could. And I did.

Happy New Year (with whiskey) from Dallas, TX! That's where we partied, BTW.

Happy New Year (with whiskey) from Dallas, TX! That’s where we partied, BTW.

I just said to Trent (again), “Can you believe it’s freakin’ 2014?!?!?!”
