One for the Record Books

Our annual Truckee River tubing weekend in Reno has now come and gone. Our fifth such adventure of floating debauchery in Class 2 rapids with no helmets or life jackets.

I’m sad it’s over, as it’s my favorite weekend of the summer, but I have to say – this year, I’m also simultaneously a little happy it’s over. Because it means I survived.

We took our epic river adventuring to new heights this year. We met strangers. We met the river bottom. We got Reno’d. Real hard. And then we got out of the water, disco napped, and headed out until 4:30 AM, on a night that starred all our old favorites and some new discoveries (like a karaoke DJ that looked like Prince in a white fedora with a crew of backup singers who could cover the Temptations in perfect four-part harmony) .

I’m almost tempted to say we’re getting too old for this, but I know we’ll never learn.

See you again in 363 days, Reno…

Lessons for a New Year

We just returned from two weeks on the road around northern California and Nevada, and I thought I’d share the highlights of this journey in bite-sized nuggets of wisdom, easily applied to your own life as you venture forward into a new year. Because I’m thoughtful like that. And way too fond of my own opinion.

But first off, big ups to Art.com for giving me the time off between Christmas and New Year’s, paid. Company holiday — holla! I was off for 12 days straight. Ahhhhhh.

Here goes!

LESSON 1: Technology really is doing less for us all than we think, so unplug as often as you can.

What they call a “White Christmas.”

Renoooyes!

We made our regular summer trip to Reno this past weekend, to tube the Truckee River.

Before tubing the Truckee River.

Summer 2012 Reno crew, pre-tubing: Trent, Lisa, Chris, Nadja, JP, Carla.

I don’t know what it is about Reno, man, but I F#@%ING LOVE IT. It’s my West Coast mecca. It’s set in this beautiful location, right on the eastern slope of the Sierras, but the natural beauty isn’t enough to distract from the fact that it’s in Nevada — a casino town that hasn’t seen any real investment in decades, trapped in the 1970s, full of all the REALLY pathetic types who can’t afford Vegas (types like ME!).
